What to look for when choosing tallow skincare

Tallow skincare comes in many forms, from pure tallow to face creams, cleansing balms, solid cleansers and lip care. The products can differ widely in composition, consistency and price.

The ingredient name alone therefore tells only part of the story. To understand a product, it helps to look at where the raw material comes from, how it has been processed, and what the finished formulation is meant to do.

Here are five questions that can help you choose.

1. Where does the tallow come from?

A known origin lets the producer trace the raw material back to its source. It also makes concrete answers possible about how the animals are kept, and how the tallow is handled and processed.

At Libra Luxe, our tallow comes from Vallumrød farm. Kathleen Andersen, our founder and managing director, visits the farm and collects the raw material herself. The contact with the farm gives us insight into how the animals are kept and the people behind the raw material.

Libra Luxe cleans and prepares the tallow before it is used in production. The same raw material is a starting point for all four of our products, with different formulations for cleansing, face care and lip care.

2. What is the product meant to do?

A cleansing balm and a face cream have different jobs. That holds true even when both contain tallow.

A cleanser should help remove what you want to wash away, and is then rinsed off. A face cream or lip mask should stay on and provide care. This difference shapes the choice of ingredients, the consistency and how the product is assessed for safety.

At Libra Luxe, each product has its own role:

Aurora Melt is a cleansing balm. Tallow is combined with apricot kernel oil, shea butter and candelilla wax, among others. The formulation also contains an emulsifying, cleansing ingredient that helps the lipid base mix with water as you rinse. This is an important part of how the balm works as a cleanser and makeup remover.

Aurora Rinse is a solid facial cleanser. It is made by saponifying tallow and plant oils, including apricot kernel oil, coconut oil and castor oil. During saponification, the fats are converted into soap. Rinse should therefore be understood as a cleanser, with a different function from the tallow in a cream. Work it into a lather and rinse thoroughly.

Aurora Veil is a whipped face cream. Here tallow is combined with shea butter, jojoba, squalane, bisabolol and vitamin E. The ingredients have different roles, from emollient care and moisture retention to soothing and antioxidant properties.

Luna Dawn is care for the lips. Tallow is combined with castor oil, jojoba, rosehip seed oil, squalane and candelilla wax, among others. Oils and wax give the rich consistency and a caring layer on the lips. Luna Dawn can be used in a small amount as needed, including before bed.

It is the finished composition and its use that give each product its identity.

3. Why were the other ingredients chosen?

An ingredient list becomes more useful when you understand the roles behind the names.

Emollient ingredients contribute to a softer, more supple feel. Occlusive ingredients help limit moisture loss. Wax can give structure and form a film, while emulsifying ingredients can make a lipid-based cleanser easier to rinse off.

Antioxidants such as vitamin E also help protect the lipids in the formulation from oxidation. That is a different task from the one preservatives have.

Which ingredients are needed depends on the product. A cleansing balm that meets water in use places different demands on the formulation than a lip mask. That is why we assess each formulation on its own.

When you compare products, look for a clear purpose behind the composition. The number of ingredients alone says little about how well a product suits you.

4. What do safety assessment and testing mean?

It is useful to know what has actually been examined when a product is described as assessed or tested.

Each of the four Libra Luxe products has its own cosmetic product safety report. The assessments take into account the ingredients, their amounts and how the product is meant to be used. A cleanser that is rinsed off is assessed for a different exposure than a product that stays on the skin.

Product samples from all four have also been analysed for microbiological quality at BAV Institut. The reports also describe stability follow-up and assessments of the packaging.

These examinations answer specific questions about the products. They are different from clinical efficacy studies, which measure, for example, changes in skin hydration or wrinkles.

For us, precise information is part of our responsibility as a producer.

5. What lies behind the price and the experience?

When you consider the price, you can look at the amount of product, the recommended dosage and the work behind it.

At Libra Luxe, this includes collecting and processing the tallow, developing the formulations, production, filling or moulding, and documenting every batch.

The products are made by Libra Luxe in Kongsberg, Norway. As managing director and producer, Kathleen follows every production run and every step of the process.

The experience of using a product deserves attention too. Do you prefer a balm, a whipped cream or a solid cleanser? Do you want fragrance, or do you need fragrance-free skincare?

All four of our products contain fragrance ingredients. Essential oils can contain fragrance allergens, so if you have a known allergy, check the ingredient list before you buy. Follow the directions for use and storage as well. A solid cleanser, for example, should be left to dry between uses, while products in jars should be handled with clean, dry hands or utensils.

Where to begin?

Start with what you want help with in everyday life.

If you want to remove makeup, Aurora Melt can be a natural place to start. If you prefer a solid facial cleanser, Aurora Rinse is the option in the collection. For rich, emollient face care, explore Aurora Veil. For the lips, Luna Dawn is made especially for that area.

You can start with one product and get to know how it fits into your routine. Follow the recommended use and notice how your skin responds.

A choice you can understand

Quality becomes easier to judge when the producer gives concrete answers.

Where does the raw material come from? What is the formulation developed for? Why were the ingredients chosen? And how has the product been assessed and followed up?

This is the information we want to make available at Libra Luxe. Tallow gives the collection a shared starting point. The work on each formulation gives each product its own role in your skincare.
